Summer is now sadly almost behind us and for many of us it’s back to the office, the endless ‘to do’ lists and a sea of emails to cover off. On a positive note though, what better time to open your mind up to some fresh new ideas to reinvigorate your passion for work? The time is now, as the saying goes.
In an increasingly noisy world where we all seem to be getting busier by the minute, it’s often hard to know who is worth really listening to. With change always just around the corner, keeping up with the latest thinking and trends whilst also taking time to reflect on our own company’s development is important to maintaining a happy workforce.
The team here at Innecto are keen podcast listeners, and our list below is just a few of our favourites that we open our ears to and get ready to take some serious mental notes. We’ve picked one for every day of the week to help you dust off those cogs and get them into some serious motion…
Monday: Eat, sleep, work, repeat
Named after a pattern we can all recognise, sometimes too often! This insightful podcast talks about culture at work, with guest speakers who really know their stuff whatever industry they are from - and there really is a variety, from neuroscientists to employment gurus. One broadcast that was particularly insightful featured a sports psychologist who was discussing what we can learn from successful teams. A very interesting listen for those into their employment and employee psychology.
Tuesday: Work Life TED
New York Times bestselling author, organisational psychologist, and high flyer in the world’s top 10 most influential management thinkers, Adam Grant runs the show on this weekly TED talk podcast that will inspire and motivate you as you weave your way through some jaw-dropping guest speakers. Including astronauts – speaking live from the International Space Station. Which just brings whole new meaning to reaching new heights in the workplace. Adam describes his own show as ‘finding out how to make work not suck’ and bring insights from wildly diverse companies such as Pixar and JP Morgan Chase. This is definitely one to muse over with your morning coffee.
Wednesday: How to Own the Room
Girl power isn’t just for women – we can all learn a lot from inspirational women in business on how to do a fantastic job motivating our employees, often by leading by example ourselves. This funny but brilliant podcast with TV presenter Viv Groskop is a great way to start learning some top tips and tricks on how to be a brilliant speaker and do just what it promises on the tin – own the room.
Thursday: Radio 4 – The Bottom Line
This general business show is good for those all-important C-Suite level discussions. Our ears pricked up recently at a show they did on the Personalisation Revolution and it’s definitely one for senior staff to keep high up on their radar.
Friday: Emotion @ Work with Phil Wilcox
Phil Wilcox is a bit of an icon in the HR world and his show doesn’t disappoint. It moves away from the more traditional severe, hard and operational style of HR podcasts and instead really digs deep. If you’re looking for some intelligent but human insight into what makes us tick as humans, then this is the one for you. A 30-60 minutes well-spent that offers a different, honest perspective on how emotions play a role in our working lives. With wellbeing continuing to move up the agenda, this is not one to be ignored.
And something for the weekend…
Saturday: Radio 2 Confessions
If you’re looking for something a bit more fun to brighten up those duller days this Autumn, we do recommend winding down with Radio 2 Confessions. This (now sadly discontinued) show is hosted by Simon Mayo and features the stories of people confessing some of their darkest secrets – work and otherwise. Funny, witty, and a total guilty pleasure of a few of us here at Innecto – join our club!
Sunday: Freakonomics
Get back to work ready on a Sunday with this American-focused but very insightful and unique look at the world. The show speaks with special guests including entrepreneurs and Nobel Laureates and has a whole series we love called “The Secret Life of a CEO”. One for a motivational Sunday on the sofa.
