Best of 2024: Our favourite podcasts and books

Posted on 13 December 2024 by Justine Woolf

Our consultants haven’t always been at Innecto, they have years of in-house experience before joining us and are also preparing for Christmas like everyone else! As we gear up for the festive period, we asked them for some seasonal stocking-fillers - recommendations on what they’ve been listening to or reading this year, either for fun or work.

Justine Woolf, Director of Consulting – Meet Justine >

Just for Fun: For downtime I really enjoy Miss Me on BBC Sounds with Lily Allen and Miquita Oliver. I just love the fact that they have been friends since birth and are so open about what is going on in their lives. How to fail with Elizabeth Day is celebrities (mainly) reflecting on what they’ve learnt from things going wrong in their lives, which can be interesting, and Terribly Famous is like a back stage glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous!

Work-related: The Brightmine Podcast (UK) is a great listen – I was privileged to join them earlier in the year to share insights of the survey we ran on boosting employee engagement around benefits to achieve better ROI. Another one I like listening to is the FT’s Working it on the topical challenges we face in HR.

Sarah Lardner, Director of Business Innovation, Senior Principal Consultant – Meet Sarah >

Just for Fun: I enjoy The Infinite Monkey Game and You’re Dead To Me on Spotify, normally while I’m out walking or running. I love learning and laughing at the same time and they often make me laugh out loud!

Work-related: I’ve got into live streaming webinars this year, mainly through Linkedin. They’re great to have on in the background and I’m interested in content that’s AI or tech-related. It can be a bit hit and miss but it’s compelling – even the comments people leave amaze me.

Cathryn Edmondson, Lead Consultant – Meet Cathryn >

Just for Fun: I love the Rest Is History with Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook. I am a self-confessed history geek but the way they take different historical events and talk you through what happened is so engaging and accessible. I think it could make history interesting for pretty much anyone, not only geeks like me!

Simon Cook, Senior Consultant – Meet Simon >

Just for Fun (and work):  Notoriously I do not read many books, much to the dismay of my 8-year-old daughter, who is on the fifth Harry Potter. I am reading a book at the moment, though, about a charity called Kick, who provide values-driven PE, dance, mentoring and chaplaincy in schools and the community. With my background in HR & Reward I’ve been able to support the charity and it’s been great to see them grow to nearly 100 staff and support 28,000 young people. The book covers the past 10 years and the young lives they’ve impacted.

Holly Coe, Senior Reward Consultant – Meet Holly >

Just for 'Fun': My eldest son was diagnosed with ADHD this year so I’m on my own kind of voyage of discovery with that, including reading lots more and listening to things to better understand it. Alex Partridge on Linkedin is doing a lot to raise awareness of this in the workplace, in a funny and insightful way.

Work-related: I always enjoy the REBA alerts for the short and snappy updates on everything reward and benefit related.

Spencer Hughes, Reward Consultant – Meet Spencer >

Just for Fun: Off-Menu continues to be my go-to podcast. Hosted by comedians Ed Gamble and James Acaster, guests go through their dream menus. You don’t have to be a foodie to listen to it - it’s always entertaining and I’ve also widened my own horizons when it comes to food.
