Job evaluation. It can be a bit dull can’t it? But really it’s about so much more than just slotting a job into a structure – that’s only one part of it. Let me tell you that the real power of job evaluation lies in these four things, which can help you meet your strategic HR goals:
1. Talent management
Understanding, building and identifying talent to ensure the right individuals are in the right roles, within the right function, is key to successful and sustainable equity growth. Job evaluation can help you here by providing clarity around career pathways and succession planning, helping retain talented individuals. Understanding how to nurture and grow an individual within the role itself and/or level assigned will provide greater satisfaction and increase the role’s value.
2. Organisational design
Job evaluation helps you with your goals around organisation design. It allows HR to take a strategic view and informed approach on people in the future planning of the business. Understanding what the organisation needs to look like is critical to success; in other words, what roles, at what level and in what areas do you need for the business to achieve its objectives?
3. Foundations for pay
Job evaluation will enable you to create a fair, transparent structure for your organisation. It shows true commitment to employees that you are serious about paying fairly, providing consistency and being transparent around reward. It provides a robust foundation to build reward upon; allowing you to make confident decisions around pay and progression. Job evaluation enables you to align to any competency framework or leadership model you might have in place, and it allows you to assess performance.
4. Gender pay
With Gender Pay Reporting coming up soon, you need to build your organisation’s narrative around gender pay. Job evaluation helps you do this by using justifiable levels. If you’re like most organisations, you’re going to have a pay difference of around 20%. The worst case scenario is that female employees will believe that their male colleagues are paid 20% more than them. Developing a compelling narrative allows you to tell the story of your organisation and explain how colleagues at the same level are paid similar amounts but there might be a gap towards the senior end where you’re missing some senior female colleagues.
